Strength training is a type of exercise where your muscles work against resistance to grow and become stronger.
The resistance in strength training can come from weights, resistance bands or your bodyweight.
Strength training will not only strengthen your muscles, but also your nervous system to activate your muscles more efficiently. In turn this will improve the strength of your bones, tendons and ligaments.
The result? A body that is stronger, more functional and more resilient.
Finding the Balance
While I am of course slightly biased, I am a huge advocate of Pilates being the foundation of your weekly workout regimen. The body awareness, balance, mobility and flexibility you achieve through Pilates sets the foundation for all forms of exercise – to move efficiently and free of pain in everything you do.
For the ultimate balance, I recommend complementing your regular Pilates with a sprinkle of cardio and/or strength training.
This combination will help you to build and maintain lean muscle, improve mobility, increase bone density and boost your heart health – all important factors for feeling stronger, and living better for longer!
